I just unpacked my sandy clothes from the suitcase after my fabulous Fit Bodies, Inc. teaching vacation at Breathless Punta Cana. Every time I travel on a teaching vacation I remember why I created this business and why I love it so much.
Landing in Punta Cana
There is no question you are in the Caribbean when you land at the Punta Cana airport. Walking off the plane you are immediately greeted with sunshine and warm breezes as you head toward the outdoor customs area which is a huge thatched palapa. The lines of happy vacationers move quickly as the friendly Dominican customs team welcomed us to their country. We walked through the immigration area with only a nod and a smile, even though I was carrying 8 sets of boxing gloves. No problem here. They love having us and know we will return soon.
Arriving at Breathless
More smiles, a cool towel and a glass of champagne with Chambord to match the purple accent of the hotel and a big fat Welcome to the Party! A quick seat at the reservations desk as I mention I am the Fit Bodies, Inc. fitness instructor for the week. Out pops Gabino, the head of Entertainment, to talk to me about my schedule. They LOVE having our pros there because we are part of the branding at these resorts.
Especially Breathless with the health and wellness theme combined with the party theme. Now this is my kinda place!! Since my room isn’t quite ready, I head to the lobby bar to get some work done and before I could take out the computer, I am greeted by lovely servers anxious to please.
Checking in a short time later to my beautiful room it takes me seconds to unpack and get myself down to the beach to scout out the spot for morning yoga and bootcamp. Now mind you, this resort is not tiny. So just going from beach to room to lobby area where you find most of the restaurants, could be considered a workout. But Fit Bodies, Inc. takes it one step further with our dedicated fitness and yoga professionals offering classes to the guests of all levels here. It was such an honor to be the one in that position this week.
Whats for Dinner?
Now I know I have the whole week to try them all but it is a tough decision each night. There are two restaurants near the beach, one is mainly Caribbean style/Dominican fare and one is a steak house. Open air settings with the coolest decoration of hanging shells clinking in the breeze. All the others are near the lobby area so you can walk around and choose from French, Lebanese, International, Italian, Asian, tapas and even a buffet. Now, ask my friends, I am not usually up for buffet for dinner, but the food is amazing and you are seated in the same setting as an ala carte restaurant so it’s the best of both. Also there is the coco café you will find at all the Amresorts hotels and one of my favorite stops. The friendly baristas make your coffee, latte, even tea the way you like it and with a smile of course. There is also a grill on the beach and free 24 hour room service.
My favorite? Croquette, the French restaurant. LOVE the décor and they have cheese for dessert!
Teaching in Paradise
I was up early for my daily run before class. I love it here because there is a great trail directly behind the beach. The beach can be challenging because of the soft sand and angles but the trail is covered in palm trees to offer a canopy and the surface is sand, palm fronds and coconuts. So not quite the trail system I normally run here in Kentucky but the challenge is much the same. I pass by a couple other hotels and am recognized by the guards and store vendors since this is not my first visit. Happy the run is over I hit the room to change and head for my first cup of coffee getting ready for the yoga class on the beach. Shade is the one thing that is not included- at least for yoga class! There are lots of palapas on the beach but too low for a sun salutation. The E Team takes such good care of me and the guest by getting the mats, towels and water for everyone. Guests arrive excited I am there to offer them a quality yoga class from an experienced certified professional. Some are practitioners and some are beginners and there are many in between. But class is geared to them all.
Following the final Namaste is Bootcamp! Here at Breathless we have lots of props such as weights, TRX cables, bands and tubing, stability balls and more. I like to mix it up with some old style low impact moves on the beach to warm up and then interval that with weights, TRX and mat time. The heat and sun are intense at this point of the morning so class only lasts about 35 to 45 minutes. Happy sweaty smiling guests leave to find their beach or pool chairs and relax after the workout and I do the same.
Mi Oficina en la Playa
What else I love about Breathless Punta Cana is the Unlimited Connectivity app which is also found at many other Amresorts hotels. That means free wifi! Here though, I can hook up to the internet from the front of this huge hotel to the waters edge of the ocean. So my office is a beach chair, my iphone, ipad, computer and a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Or in the lobby bar with a glass of wine, glass of sparkling water and some nuts to soak it up. You may not need to be connected like me but this app offers free phone calls home too to talk to the kids who aren’t allowed at this adult only property.
Welcome to the Party
In Jamaica they say welcome home, in Mexico they say welcome back but at Breathless they say Welcome to the Party! The ETeam is busy all day with activities on the beach, two pool areas and in the plaza. The shows at night whether in the plaza or in the theatre are star quality cirque du soleil material. All the hotels have great entertainment but the talented Dominican people really know how to put on a show. The lobby bar called Wink is open late and then there is After Dark, the disco. If you like to stay up and party, this is the place. I must say I didn’t until the last night when DJ Rhiannon had the place rocking from 11 to 1.
The week goes by so fast. I met so many wonderful people who came to my classes. Teaching at a resort gives you the opportunity to meet people at their best. When they are relaxed, happy and have all the time in the world. It’s a pleasure to bring yoga and fitness into their lives when it can impact them the most. Off they go with a feeling of accomplishment and hopefully something they will carry with them when they return home. Get them back into the studio or help them decide to join one. Either way, we make a difference. But I am always impacted by the guests as well. It is a constant reminder of how lucky I am to be in this industry and to have created this business from a dream to spread fitness and wellness to the world, one resort guest at a time. With over 21,000 of you out there traveling now with Fit Bodies, Inc., we are reaching that goal.
See you next time!
